Eight years and one hour ago, I sat down at this very desk, on a now-old and clunky, PowerPC laptop, and posted my first ever blog. It was a sunny, warm Sunday evening, and I’d just gotten home from shopping around 7pm to open my email up and found a note from my friend Josh that he had set up Blogger.com for my site. I was happy and estatic. I sat perched at what would be my post, ready to start telling the world about me. When I drew a blank. Yes, my mind went blank. I couldn’t think of a single thing to post that I wanted the world to know. Where would my blog go? Would I post simply about my day, or my thoughts or both? Would people like what I had to say?
Up till then, I had no problem with publishing my thoughts and skillful writing abilities on the web. In the form of emails or on message boards. These people were my friends. They already liked me.
I sat there, staring at the screen. Then I just started to type. Within ten minutes, my first post was online. I posted again some four hours later. Doesn’t everyone do that when they first discover online publishing? Post twice, sometimes minutes apart? =)
I posted once a day until the 7th of June. Then my laptop malfunctioned, and I couldn’t get online regularly anymore. I had to walk to the library and use the computer there. That got old really quick, but there was nothing I could do about it until October when I got my first internet computer: A strawberry iMac. That thing is still running somewhere in this family.
Blogging has introduced me to new people, ideas, and thoughts that I know otherwise, I wouldn’t have. I learned from my web experiences. I learned code. At first, it was just enough to post entries, now I’m confident in saying that I could make entire pages, if I wanted to. I learned FTP and how to install CGI blogware. I learned to adapt and change with the times, and there’s nothing wrong with thinking the past was good. I learned from my mistakes, both in blogging and in friendships.
I have blogged with Blogger, Greymatter, MovableType, pMachine, and something called Blossxm. I have had over ten blog domains. I have been hosted with over five different hosts. What have I learned from this? That I’m happy here on crimsonsparkle.net, with the hosts I have and the blogware that I have installed. It truly has been a good eight years. Here’s to eight more!
